The highs and lows of our brave ‘new world’.
We hope that you are staying healthy, keeping well, and managing to enjoy the sunshine safely from the comfort of your home. Outside of normal work time, life in lockdown has certainly taught us all to slow down, reflect and return to a simpler, quieter way of living. Like a lot of folk, we have been tackling our long lists of DIY jobs, discovering a love for all things green-fingered and are spending more time in the kitchen than ever before. Does anyone know where we can find yeast by the way?!
Something that we have particularly loved seeing during lockdown is the drive to ‘shop local’. We are incredibly fortunate to live in Sussex where there is a wealth of superb food and drink producers on our doorstep. Some of our favourite discoveries (so far) are The Safari Pizza Co, Parklife Coffee and Bakes and The Sussex Kitchen. Weekends just wouldn’t be the same without the freshly made sourdough bread and pastries from Sugardough in Hove.
We’ve also been enjoying a glass or two of English sparkling and loved the Good Friday celebrations where we all came together online to raise a toast to our wonderful English and Welsh wine industry. Many Sussex wine producers are delivering for FREE, including ourselves, and so why not join us in trying something new and shopping local during lockdown?
Whilst the office team are working from home, our vineyard crew, who are classified as ‘key workers,’ are keeping things nicely ticking over in the vineyard whilst working safely and sensibly. It’s possibly one of the best places to be at the moment as Mother Nature has been super generous with the weather. Like a lot of the natural world, the vines are flourishing, and this year’s growing season has got off to a terrific start with successful budburst across all sites.
There are certain aspects of this brave ‘new world’ that haven’t been quite so easy to adjust to. Juggling childcare for one. Just ask James, our General Manager, who is currently at home with two little ones under the age of 4. We haven’t quite mastered the daily morning call on Microsoft Teams where everyone either talks at once or no one talks at all! And let’s face it, there’s going to be crazy rush to get to the hairdressers once restrictions are lifted.
We may not be together at the moment, but we aren’t going to let that stop us from sharing a beer at the end of each week. As many of you might know, we like a team challenge, and our lockdown mission is to source the quirkiest, most interesting local craft beers and crack them open together on our Friday afternoon call. Something tells me that we’ll be better at this than our Project 2020 run!
Stay safe and healthy everyone and come and see us at the vineyard when we begin to emerge from lockdown. We can share a glass of fizz in the beautiful setting of our Upperton Vineyard as we look back and reflect but most importantly of all, look forward proudly knowing that we have overcome these challenging times together.
