Putting Roebuck firmly on the world’s wine map
We are absolutely thrilled to have been awarded yet another superb accolade – the trophy for ‘Best in Show’ along with a Platinum medal for our 2014 Classic Cuvée at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. It is not only a proud moment for the Roebuck team, as the only English sparkling wine producer to receive this highly-sought after award at this year’s competition, but it also reinforces our wine credentials on a global stage and to an international audience.
Now in its 17th year, the Decanter World Wine Awards is the world’s largest wine competition. Over 16,500 wines from 56 countries have been tasted and evaluated by expert wine judges from all corners of the globe including 37 Masters of Wine and 9 Master Sommeliers. All wines are tasted blind and organised in flights laid out by country, region, colour, grape, style, vintage and price.
Following a rigorous, month-long judging process (not insignificant given the new found difficulties of tasting in a Covid secure environment), all gold medal recipients are re-tasted, and the wines that are deemed to be outstanding get awarded a score of 97-100 points and a Platinum medal. Of the 16,518 wines judged, 178 wines from around the world met this exacting ‘Platinum’ quality standard at this year’s competition including our 2014 Classic Cuvée, which received 97 points. All Platinum medal winners are then re-tasted with greater precision and scrutiny and only an elite set of the finest 50 wines are awarded the highly sought after ‘Best in Show’ trophy.
Our 2014 Classic Cuvée wowed the judges who described the wine as: “A pale, silvery hue and a stream of fine bubbles, followed by keen, ultra-fresh aromas in which the graceful, creamy notes of fine Chardonnay mingle with deeper fruits from the two Pinots: apple, pear, quince.”
We are delighted to have won this incredible award. It very firmly puts Roebuck Estates on the wine map and benchmarks us against some of the very best sparkling wines produced in the world. As ever, it’s with particular thanks to the hard work, dedication and expertise of the brilliant teams involved in bringing this wine to a global audience. We will be celebrating in style when we can but for now, it’s all hands on deck as we hand harvest the wonderful fruit that the 2020 growing season has blessed us with. Our trophy-winning 2014 Classic Cuvée is available to buy by the bottle and case through our online shop.
